  • The cribbage board: a wooden or plastic board with holes that are used for score-keeping.

  • The crib: a set of four cards that are set aside at the beginning of each round and used by the dealer at the end.

  • The two distinct scoring stages: the play and the show.

  • The unique scoring system: points are awarded for card combinations that add up to 15 or 31, pairs, runs, flushes, jacks, and the last card.

The History of Cribbage

Cribbage was created by the English poet Sir John Suckling in the early 17th century, as a derivation of the game "noddy". Noddy was an old English game that involved matching cards and scoring points for pairs and sequences. Cribbage added the feature of a crib and changed the scoring system for points.

Cribbage became popular among sailors, soldiers, and travelers, as it was easy to carry and play with a deck of cards and a cribbage board. It also became a favorite game in pubs and clubs in Britain and America. Cribbage was even played by famous figures such as King Charles II, Winston Churchill, and George Washington.

The Rules of Cribbage

The rules of cribbage may vary slightly depending on the number of players and the preferences of the players, but the basic rules are as follows:

The Cribbage Board

The cribbage board is used to keep track of the score of each player. It has four rows of 30 holes each, divided into two sets of 15 holes for each player. There are also two extra holes for pegging out at the end. Each player has two pegs that are used to mark their current and previous scores. The first player to reach or exceed 121 points wins the game.

The Cards and the Deal

Cribbage is played with a standard 52-card deck. The cards are ranked from high to low as follows: K Q J 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 A. The ace is always low and cannot be used as a high card in a run.

At the beginning of the game, the players cut the cards to decide who will be the first dealer. The player. The player who cuts the lowest card becomes the first dealer. The dealer shuffles the cards and deals six cards to each player. Each player then chooses two cards to discard face down to form the crib. The crib belongs to the dealer, but it is not used until the end of the round. The non-dealer then cuts the deck and the dealer reveals the top card, which is called the starter or the cut. If the starter is a jack, the dealer scores two points immediately, which is called "two for his heels".

The Play

The play consists of a series of turns in which each player plays one card from their hand face up, adding its value to the running total. The values of the cards are as follows: Aces are worth one point, face cards are worth 10 points, and all other cards are worth their numerical value. The player who plays the first card says its value, and the next player adds their card's value to it and says the new total. For example, if the first player plays a 5 and says "five", and the next player plays a 6 and says "eleven".

The players must keep playing until one of them cannot play a card without making the total more than 31. The player who plays the last card that is equal to or less than 31 scores one point, or two points if the total is exactly 31. This is called "one for last" or "two for 31". The total is then reset to zero and the other player starts a new series of turns with any cards they have left in their hand. The play continues until both players have played all their cards. The player who plays the last card of the round scores one point for "one for go", unless they already scored "one for last" or "two for 31".

During the play, points are also scored for making certain combinations with the cards played. These are:

  • Pair: If a player plays a card that matches the rank of the previous card, they score two points for a pair.

  • Pair royal: If a player plays a third card of the same rank as the previous two cards, they score six points for a pair royal.

  • Double pair royal: If a player plays a fourth card of the same rank as the previous three cards, they score 12 points for a double pair royal.

  • Run: If a player plays a card that forms a sequence of three or more consecutive cards with the previous cards, they score one point for each card in the run. For example, if a player plays a 7 after a 5 and a 6, they score three points for a run of three. The cards do not have to be in order, but they must be consecutive in rank. Aces are always low in runs.

  • Fifteen: If a player plays a card that makes the total exactly 15, they score two points for fifteen.

The combinations are counted in the order they occur, and they can overlap with each other. For example, if a player plays a 5 after a 5 and a 10, they score two points for a pair, two points for fifteen, and six points for a pair royal, for a total of 10 points.

The Show

After the play is over, each player counts their score from their hand and the starter card. The non-dealer shows their hand first, followed by the dealer. The crib is shown last, and it is scored by the dealer. The score for each hand is calculated by adding up the points for the following combinations:

  • Fifteen: Any combination of cards that adds up to 15 is worth two points. For example, a 5 and a 10, or a 7, a 6, and a 2.

  • Pair: Any pair of cards of the same rank is worth two points. For example, two jacks, or two threes.

  • Pair royal: Any three cards of the same rank is worth six points. For example, three queens, or three fours.

  • Double pair royal: Any four cards of the same rank is worth 12 points. For example, four kings, or four aces.

  • Run: Any sequence of three or more consecutive cards is worth one point for each card. For example, a 4, a 5, and a 6, or an ace, a 2, and a 3. The cards do not have to be in order, but they must be consecutive in rank. Aces are always low in runs.

  • Flush: Any four cards of the same suit in the hand (not including the starter) is worth four points. If the starter is also of the same suit, the flush is worth five points. For example, four hearts, or five clubs. A flush in the crib must include the starter to count.

  • One for his nob: If the hand contains the jack of the same suit as the starter, it is worth one point. For example, if the starter is the king of spades, and the hand has the jack of spades.

The combinations are counted in any order, and they can use the same cards more than once. For example, a hand of 5-5-5-J and a starter of 5 would score 29 points: eight points for four fifteens (5-5-5-5, 5-5-J-5, 5-5-5-J, and J-5-5-5), 12 points for a double pair royal (5-5-5-5), six points for a pair royal (J-J-J), two points for a pair (J-J), and one point for his nob (J).
